The Upending of the Global Supply Chain

©iStock/jamesteohart
Because COVID-19 has led to lockdowns, suppliers in the chain are temporarily ceasing production, and logistics providers can no longer transport goods as seamlessly, particularly across borders.

Read more about how to make the global supply chain more resilient.

Other good thought pieces on this important topic:

Coronavirus and Supply Chain Disruption: What Firms Can Learn – which tackles:
Should they [business owners] broaden their supplier choices, or do more local or near-shore sourcing? How much inventory of raw materials, sub-assemblies and finished products should they stock to tide over the crisis?
Coronavirus Is a Wake-Up Call for Supply Chain Management – which covers:
A new breed of services companies can help acquire and analyze supply network data and organize the results in a user-friendly way. Their services typically do not map the supply networks all the way down to raw materials, but they may provide a start. A few of the companies operating in this space include Elementum, Llamasoft, and Resilinc. (Disclosure: One of us, Bindiya Vakil, is the founder and CEO of Resilinc.)
Coronavirus Should Inspire Businesses to Prepare Their Supply Chains for the Future – which covers how:
Companies caught flat-footed should learn their lesson from this crisis and begin making fundamental changes now to prepare their supply chains for future shocks.

A Three-Peat: The Global Small Business Blog is Named Best Small Business Blog 2016

©FitSmallBusiness.com; with permission
We are honored and humbled to be included in the list of "Best Small Business Blogs of 2016."  This is our third year in a row -- a three-peat -- to earn this award.

The big question becomes:  What is it like to be peer-to-peer with Seth Godin, Richard Branson and Harvard Business Review, to name just a few of the people and organizations that write great blogs?  Awesome!

We are the only blogger mentioned operating in the global small business space.  Meaning, many may write about small business but no one, I mean no one, covers going global as a small business owner the way we do (since 2004!).

Thank you to Fit Small Business for including us and thank you to all of you for your continued readership.  It means the world to us.

A Global Small Business Expands As You Travel

iStock/Thinkstock
According to international author, entrepreneur and speaker Daniel Priestley, by 2020, global small businesses (GSB) will be in full swing -- reaching cities worldwide, making millions of dollars, maintaining a low head count and developing global brands that make them look much bigger than they are.
Having an GSB will create an enviable lifestyle. A GSB isn’t like having a traditional, local small business that prevents the owner from traveling and limits the money they can make to the local economy.  A GSB on the contrary, expands as you travel and is only limited by the size of the micro-niche and the creativity of the team.
