Ensuring a Steady and Secure Global Supply Chain

©iStock/metamorworks
President Joe Biden is looking to work with international partners to ensure a stable and reliable supply chain.  Further, he is preparing to sign an executive order to review U.S. supply chains for large-capacity batteries, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and semiconductors that power cars, phones, military equipment and other goods.

The United States has become increasingly reliant on imports of these goods - a potential national security and economic risk that the Biden administration hopes to address.

The Simplified Trade Regime Just Got Complicated

©iStock/znm
"The global pandemic has had a severe negative impact on communities that are heavily dependent on informal cross-border trade, exacerbating, particularly, the challenges faced by women traders," reads the report.

Peter Mathuki, CEO of the East African Business Council (EABC), told The New Times that lockdowns affected women cross border traders especially those who trade under the Simplified Trade Regime (STR).

"Most of these women trade by means of motorcycles, bicycles, and even on foot. These means of transportation aren't allowed to cross the borders," Mathuki said.

The STR is an arrangement implemented by countries to formalize and improve the performance of informal cross border traders and enable them to benefit from regional preferential treatment when importing or exporting goods within the region.

Norway, the Peace-Loving Nation

‘Game of Thrones’ star Kristoffer Hivju takes issue with General Motors' Super Bowl ads in three response videos.

In General Motors’ Super Bowl ad, Will Ferrell is seen punching a globe while he gets angry that Norway far outranks the U.S. in electric vehicle sales. The country is used as a foil in the ad from McCann Worldgroup, which goes on to push GM’s message that its proprietary Ultium battery technology will help pave the way for broader EV adoption in the U.S.

But now Audi’s Norway division is punching back at GM and Ferrell, with help from Norwegian actor and “Game of Thrones” star Kristoffer Hivju.

Check it out.  Even Ford's Norway unit has gotten in on the fun!

Cushioning the Financial Blow for Global Small Businesses

©iStock/imtmphoto
Developing-market small and midsize enterprises (SMEs), which have long competed for funding against bigger corporations, are counting on help from governments and multilateral lenders to keep afloat.

Full recovery from the Covid-19 crisis will be critical for three developing regions – Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East and it will come with challenges.

According to a 2018 research paper by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), SMEs accounted for 96% of all businesses and provided two out of three private sector jobs in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. And in that region, SMEs generated 42% of GDP in 2015. These companies are especially important players in APAC cross-border trade, accounting as of 2015 for over 40% of export values in China and India, 26% in Thailand, 19% in South Korea and 16% in Indonesia.

Did the $500 Billion in USA Aid Help Global Small Businesses?

©iStock/Urupong
Some economists say the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has not proved as useful as other aid.  Academic economists who have studied the program have concluded that it has saved relatively few jobs and that, at a cost of more than half a trillion dollars, it has been far less efficient than other government efforts to help the economy.

On the other hand, there are global small business owners who if they hadn't received a PPP loan, they would have been out of business.

The debate could sway the new Biden administration’s plans.  The question becomes:  Are we about saving jobs or saving businesses?

Read on to discover whether the $500 billion in USA aid helped save global small businesses during the onslaught of the global pandemic.
