Grievances and Drama On the World Stage in Artificial Intelligence

A jury rejected Elon Musk’s claims against OpenAI, finding that he brought his lawsuit against the company and Chief Executive Sam Altman after the statute of limitations expired.

The verdict brings to a close a case that fixated the tech world on the grievances and drama of some of the most powerful personalities in artificial intelligence.

Winning the AI Race

Facebook parent Meta invested $14.3 billion in AI startup Scale AI and hired its CEO and co-founder Alexandr Wang.  They are spending billions to grab the lead in the AI race, building out the data centers needed to develop and power high-end large language models. 

It's clear Meta wants to win the AI race.  Is that likely to happen up against Sam Altman and his OpenAI?

Big News: A New Family of Products for the Age of Artificial Intelligence

On May 21, 2025, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, said the company was paying $6.5 billion to buy IO, a one-year-old start-up created by Jony Ive, a former top Apple executive who designed the iPhone.  They had already owned 23% of the company and now will own 100%.

The all-stock deal, which effectively unites Silicon Valley royalty, is intended to usher in what the two men call “a new family of products” for the age of artificial general intelligence, or A.G.I., which is shorthand for a future technology that achieves human-level intelligence.

The goal of the partnership, or the blending of the two companies, was to leverage A.I. to help people make some sense of the noise.  Which means a new cool device by Ive.  Ive's design studio, LoveFrom remains independent from OpenAI to work on other projects.

OpenAI announced a new advance from GPT-4 that signals a shift in approach—a model that can “reason” logically through many difficult problems and is significantly smarter than existing AI without a major scale-up.

The new model, dubbed OpenAI o1, can solve problems that stump existing AI models, including OpenAI’s most powerful existing model, GPT-4o. Rather than summon up an answer in one step, as a large language model normally does, it reasons through the problem, effectively thinking out loud as a person might, before arriving at the right result. 

Code name:  Strawberry.

Say Hello to Sora, the Next AI Game Changer

OpenAI has introduced new technology – Sora – that uses artificial intelligence to create high-quality videos from text descriptions. 

The company released short clips showcasing vivid, seemingly realistic videos, including woolly mammoths trekking across a snowy field, ocean waves crashing against a cliff’s shoreline and people doing everyday things like reading a book or walking down a city street.

You heard it here second.  The Wall Street Journal reported it first.
