Today in Global Small Business: Have a Proud Juneteenth

©iStock/Vector/Archive
What's affecting me, my clients, my colleagues and other global small business owners:

  • Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.  Have a happy and proud one.
  • As the nation celebrates Juneteenth, it’s time to get rid of these three myths about slavery.
  • The complicated history of Juneteenth.
  • Quote of the week:  “"Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. It's a celebration of progress. It's an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible—and there is still so much work to do." – Barack Obama
  • When did slavery end?  The answer is elusive.
  • Juneteenth became a federal holiday two years ago. What does the day commemorate?

Juneteenth: A Brighter Morning Is To Come

President Biden says, "Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation, and a promise of a brighter morning to come. This is a day of profound — in my view — profound weight and profound power."

Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day and historically known as Jubilee Day and Emancipation Day) is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating the emancipation of African American slaves.  Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1866, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States. It became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. – Source here

Happy Juneteenth to all Americans.
