According to Gianpiero Petriglieri, associate professor of organizational behavior at INSEAD, few of us these days expect our organizations to guarantee a job for life. In that sense, we are all independent workers.

In fact, mobility often defines talent in this world: The people who feel safest are those who know they can leave, and the people organizations are often most desperate to keep are those with ample options elsewhere.

What does this mean?  We must master the new world of work. And to do as such, Petriglieri says you must "fashion a masterful self, able to endure adversity, experience freedom and be of service to others."

Black Swan Start-Ups and Where They Flock To

In the Five Cs of Locating a Start-Up, Dr. Sami Mahroum, Founding Director of INSEAD’s Innovation and Policy Initiative, talks about why you should start your Internet company in California and how “Black swan” start-ups have cut paths beyond the hi-tech heartlands.

If you are wondering what the Five Cs are:

1. Cost - factors such as rents, living costs, wages
2. Convenience – including the entrepreneurs’ familiarity with a place, government policies, regulatory and legal environment, proximity to key markets and technological readiness
3. Community – networks and social capital
4. Calibre  - the quality of the workforce and infrastructure, such as roads, airports and ICT
5. Creativity – the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the local community.

"Essentially, it is up to entrepreneurs to match the opportunities and challenges of a location with their products’ capabilities and needs.  Entrepreneurs are more likely to succeed if they are able to develop strategies and business plans that leverage local advantages and make up for deficiencies by tapping into surpluses in other locations," says Dr. Mahroum.

In many parts of the world, especially in the U.A.E., entrepreneurship is viewed as a good career move that offers high status, which also helps enable favorable media attention.

“Entrepreneurs in the UAE are looking eagerly for [business] opportunities in different sectors. They feel that they can improve their standard of living by owning a business rather than be employed,” al Mutawa told INSEAD Knowledge. “The type of business ranges from the regular to the innovative, and we even have lifestyle entrepreneurs.”
