As John Yunker says, "While reviewing websites for the 2025 Web Globalization Report Card I was struck by two things:

  1. Deglobalization has had a visible (and negative) impact on global websites
  2. AI is also having an impact, though you have to look closely to see it

Combined, I believe we are in the midst of the calm before the storm."

John Yunker – web globalization geek at Byte Level Research and also a prolific author of books, plays and short stories – always does his thorough research and has the answer to the question:  What is the world's most multilingual website?

He says, "One might assume that tech leaders like Facebook and Google lead the internet in languages."

He goes on to say, "Yet according to recent analysis, the two most linguistically fluent websites on the internet are managed by not-for-profit organizations: The Jehovah’s Witnesses and Wikipedia."

The One and Only Web Globalization Report Card 2024 by John Yunker

©iStock/metamorworks
I've been a fan of John Yunker's for more than two decades.  No one knows web globalization like John does.  He's the expert of all so-called experts on this topic.  Check out some past post about John here.

The exciting news is that he is finishing up his latest popular report card, "The Web Globalization Report Card 2024," available in two weeks.  Meanwhile, here's a glimpse of what the report offers.  He adds:

"I can tell you now that I've seen a small but notable rebound in languages, which is nice to see. Last year was the first time we witnessed a net loss in overall languages. Looks like the average number of languages supported by the leading global brands will come in at 34 languages."

Reach out to John to learn more about his company and discover a special package deal he is offering that includes a one-hour presentation on "10 Lessons from 20 Years of Web Globalization."

His email is listed in the lower left hand corner of his website: https://bytelevel.com/.

An Interview With Web Globalization Expert John Yunker

iStock/Thinkstock
I interview John Yunker (below) who during his professional career has helped thousands of companies and organizations take their websites global—or improve their existing global websites.

Here are the seven questions he addresses:
  1. What are two examples of the worst global websites and why?
  2. In terms of localizing a website, what’s the most challenging part of it? And is there a quick solution on how to overcome it?
  3. You recently wrote an interesting blog post about WhatsApp: Another “translation worthy” success story (http://www.globalbydesign.com/2014/02/20/whatsapp-another-translation-worthy-success-story/). What’s the lesson for small-business owners who want to become big and global someday?
  4. GoDaddy is marketing the new top-level domain INTERNATIONAL. Do you recommend it or not?
  5. When a company is ready to translate its website, what factors should it consider before hiring a translation agency?
  6. You’ve often written about the danger of using flags on global gateways. Can you explain why?
  7. Looking into a crystal ball, what’s in store for the future on conducting business worldwide? What should we be paranoid about (disruptive changes ahead, for example) and what should we look forward to?

John Yunker Helps You Get Lucky with Pricing in Asia

iStockphoto/Thinkstock
I have always been a fan of web globalization expert John Yunker who is big advocate for the translation of software and websites (see Global by Design and Byte Level Research, companies he manages).  In the article below, he says:

"Numbers sometimes mean much more than the data they represent. People often have lucky numbers that carry emotional significance to them."  He goes on to say:  "But lucky and unlucky numbers can vary by culture. When selling into Greater China, Japan, and Korea, retailers need to be aware of these numbers and use them to their advantage when possible."

Read the entire article to find out how to avoid the unlucky numbers in your international pricing strategy and concentrate on the lucky ones:

iStock/Thinkstock
John Yunker at Global by Design elaborates on the difference between using Bing (owned by Microsoft) versus Google on a simple search string translation of the words: "I love you."

Read more here.

Why not just go straight to: Bing translator?
Or how about Google translator?

Full disclosure: I'm a HUGE Google fan (no affiliation whatsoever). John is a Microsoft program manager and co-founder of Byte Level Research.

Weak Dollar Has Small Businesses Thinking Globally

The New York Times now reports on how the weak dollar has small businesses thinking globally. If you make your products in the U.S.A., think exports.

A hat tip to friend and colleague John Yunker at the Global By Design blog for the nudge.

Up next: Another guest expert weighs in with her comments about the 'R' word tomorrow. Stay tuned.
